Our Mission

Shrewsbury Montessori School provides a nurturing, yet stimulating environment where children can revel in the joys of learning. These early years are essential in creating a life-long yearning to seek out personal growth and to develop into a self-sufficient and capable member of society. It is the mission of Shrewsbury Montessori School to provide a prepared environment in accordance with the Montessori Philosophy in which each child may live his or her life according to individual developmental needs. Our goal is to develop the personality of the whole child and to encourage such concepts as creativity, self-discipline, initiative, independence, self-confidence, and a sense of personal and communal responsibility.
The golden beads, used throughout Shrewsbury Montessori School, represent the progression of understanding as a child learns in a Montessori environment; from units to tens to hundreds to thousands. Each child begins with concrete understanding using the single golden bead and ten-bar and moves naturally towards abstraction when the hundred-square and thousand-cube are introduced. The golden beads impart a sense of awe and understanding, and demonstrate the essence of what we do at a Montessori school. We begin with the single bead, a simple concept, and progress as each child is ready, to the next level of difficulty, or understanding. Thus, our children learn how a single bead, when grouped with others, forms a ten-bar, a hundred-square, and a thousand-cube and that each of these can build something much larger, stronger, and more complete.  At Shrewsbury Montessori School, in any given day, in all of our classrooms, we see it happen time and again with every child: it all starts with a single bead... and leads to a thousand possibilities.
